Organising company events and parties: Five things to keep in mind to avoid trouble

Company events are very specific. On the one hand, it is still a work environment and the participants are colleagues, but on the other hand, the atmosphere is often more relaxed than during a regular working day. How can you organise a corporate event so that there are no embarrassments, problems or misunderstandings? Here are five tips.

These tips were published by BusinessMatters Magazine.

Set clear rules and expectations

The first step to a successful event is to set clear expectations for all attendees and make them aware of these clearly stated rules in advance. What is included? What is not included? Who has what responsibilities? What can participants expect from the event?

Remind staff that professional etiquette is still in effect

Even if it is a company event or party, it's not a bad idea to subtly remind employees and all attendees that they should still follow basic rules of workplace etiquette and behavior.

Be clear with managers in advance what is expected of them

Team managers play a vital role in social events in that they set the tone for the event and act as role models for their subordinates. For example, if a manager starts to do something inappropriate, it's likely that his subordinates will do the same, and vice versa. Be clear with managers in advance what their roles are and what is expected of them during the event.

Organize activities that aren't going to offend anyone

Be somewhat sensitive to all employees and limit controversial activities that might not suit everyone. Activities that could be construed as borderline sexist or even racist should certainly not be allowed at company events.

Avoid providing too much alcohol

A sure-fire way to avoid potential problems and reduce the risk of any embarrassing situations is to limit the supply of alcohol at the event.
