A shortage of high-quality candidates: how can your company deal with this issue?

Despite all the economic crises, debt or high inflation in the last year or two, one thing is still true in the Czech Republic: it maintains a record low level of unemployment. However, this also poses a problem for many companies: they cannot find quality workers. How can you deal with this problem as a company? Here are some tips.

Train new employees internally

Forbes suggests one way to acquire quality workers is not to focus on recruiting people from outside, but on training current employees. So-called "reskilling", whereby a company enables an employee to become educated in a specific area and then take on a new role within the company, can help you attract quality, motivated workers who also already know the inner workings of the company.

Offer attractive benefits

Are you unable to outbid competitors and offer higher financial rewards? Then consider whether you could offer less financially demanding but still attractive benefits. This could include training opportunities, flexible working hours, home office options or unlimited holidays.

Offer alternative forms of employment

Consider whether you offer a wide enough range of contracts. Remember that as well as full-time contracts, there exist seasonal job contracts, part-time contracts, or work on the basis of a business licence. There are many high-quality workers who, for various reasons, prefer such alternatives to the standard full-time contract.

Reconsider requirements for candidates

Have you considered whether your requirements for candidates are outdated? For example, do you still require a university degree for roles where this is not really necessary? Or knowledge of several languages, even if the worker in that role can actually manage with just speaking English? Reevaluate your requirements and try to reduce your hiring criteria, as you may be unnecessarily discouraging talented candidates.

Find ways to retain more staff

This tip is essential. The best way to avoid a staff shortage is to retain current employees. Remember: it costs significantly less to retain a worker than find a new one. Seek ways to increase the loyalty and satisfaction of current workers and thus keep them at your company longer.
