4 steps to building a friendly and productive company culture

A healthy and friendly company culture is not merely a minor benefit for employees. It is a key factor that influences performance, engagement, and productivity, as well as the competitiveness and sustainability of the company as a whole. Human resources professionals should therefore continuously strive to create an environment and culture that support productivity and a positive atmosphere. Here are four steps to building such a company culture.

This text is based on an article published on the website Society for Human Resource Management.

Build a culture of open communication

Transparent communication is fundamental. Encourage the sharing of opinions across the entire organizational hierarchy and create a safe space for feedback. Regular meetings between employees and their managers, anonymous surveys, and the ability to openly express opinions even as a frontline employee are all communication standards that contribute to a productive company culture.

Work with middle management

Regardless of the strategies developed by top management or the human resources department, it is ultimately middle managers, or team leaders, who implement these ideas in practice through daily interaction with employees. Company values can be applied either effectively or poorly. Therefore, work with middle managers, train them, communicate with them, and support them in leading their teams effectively while respecting company priorities.

Support positive social interaction among employees

Encouraging relationships among colleagues is another pillar of a positive company culture. Informal meetings, team building activities, and cross departmental projects strengthen trust and cooperation within teams and across the organization.

Balance personal and professional life

A strong company culture also includes flexibility offered by the employer. From a human resources perspective, you should help employees find a balance between their work and personal lives. Flexible working hours, the option of remote work, and support for well being contribute to overall employee satisfaction, a positive company culture, and a stronger employer brand.
