Five mistakes every manager should avoid

Do you want to be a truly inspiring and effective leader, someone your subordinates respect and who can unlock the full potential of their team? Then you must avoid the following five fundamental managerial mistakes.

This list of management pitfalls was published by Entrepreneur.com.

Inability or unwillingness to communicate clearly and effectively

An effective manager must first and foremost be an effective communicator. This includes clearly delegating tasks, explaining the context of team projects, and presenting a compelling vision. Failure to do any of these things, or even being unwilling to try, will inevitably cause problems over time.

Micromanagement

New or inexperienced managers often believe they have to monitor their subordinates constantly. But that is not what effective people management looks like; on the contrary, a competent leader gives team members the space and authority they need to carry out their responsibilities independently.

Avoidance of difficult topics

One of the most common communication and leadership errors is an unwillingness to address negative topics. Believing that problems, if ignored, will solve themselves is a major mistake.

Lack of a shared team vision

If your team lacks a common goal, direction or long-term mission, your subordinates will never give maximum effort. A shared vision is always the strongest motivator.

Failure to see subordinates as individual, real people

Some managers view their team members as nothing more than a workforce represented by numbers on a spreadsheet. However, if you cannot perceive your subordinates as real individuals (and speak to them as such), you will never build the trust necessary to achieve outstanding results together.
