Questions to ask yourself before deciding to become a leader

A managerial role is a dream for many employees, or at least a logical next step in their career. However, leading a team requires specific traits and skills. Below are the key questions you need to ask yourself to assess whether leadership is the right path for you.

The following list was published by Forbes.

Am I willing to discuss awkward issues?

Leadership is not only about pleasant moments and friendly conversations. Managers are often required to raise difficult topics and address conflict. If this is something you strongly dislike, you may want to reconsider your managerial ambitions.

Can I accept not always being liked?

Team leaders cannot expect to be liked by everyone all the time. Sometimes they need to enforce discipline or deliver negative feedback, even to former peers or friends who are now their subordinates.

Do I have a certain natural authority?

Good managers tend to possess a natural sense of authority. They are not easily intimidated by the responsibility of leading others in challenging situations and find it natural to motivate those around them.

Do I align with the priorities and values of the company I will represent?

As a manager, you will not only be leading a team but also representing the company. You will need to communicate decisions made by senior leadership, seek compromises, and defend your employer’s practices. The key question, therefore, is: do you genuinely agree with the company’s values and priorities?
