When managers damage their reputation: tips on repairing your personal brand

We all know a strong personal brand is essential for career advancement and success in a managerial position. However, we are all human and, unfortunately, it sometimes happens that your reputation is damaged. For example, it may turn out that you were wrong and, together with your team, focused on a project that failed. Or you let your emotions get the better of you, raised your voice to subordinates, or behaved unprofessionally, or perhaps you overindulged at a company party and acted inappropriately. How to repair your reputation and improve how people around you perceive your personal brand? Here are some tips.

These tips were published by Entrepreneur.com.

Admit the mistake and take responsibility for it

The logical first step is to admit you made a mistake. Show that you have self-reflection and publicly accept responsibility for your error. Without this initial step, any further attempts to rebuild your personal brand will be meaningless.

Apologise to everyone affected by your mistake personally or professionally

Don't just acknowledge your mistake in a general and universal manner. Approach everyone who was negatively affected by your misstep and apologise to them individually. Explain what happened and demonstrate your willingness to work on rectifying the situation.

Demonstrate in practice that you genuinely want to rectify the situation

Your efforts to repair the situation must not remain merely words. Prove your intention to make amends with specific actions.

Ask for feedback, including the negative

Be interested in how those around you perceive you. Ask for feedback, and don't shy away from negative input. Only then will you know what steps to take to rebuild your personal brand.

Consistently demonstrate your value again

Show that one incident does not define you and that you bring value to those around you. Focus on your strengths and work on successfully completing certain tasks or projects to demonstrate your capabilities.

Be consistent

Rebuilding lost trust is a long-term process. Don't expect that behaving professionally for a few days will erase all your mistakes. Be patient, consistent, and show those around you over time that you can be relied upon.
