The company Google uses a set of questions that it asks rank and file employees in order to assess the qualities of their managers. Do you want to know which areas and questions one of the largest and most successful companies in the world considers key to evaluating managerial skills?
List of questions
According to INC.com, Google asks employees the following questions about their supervisor.
- Does your manager give you feedback that enables you to improve your performance?
- Does your manager engage in micromanagement?
- Does your supervisor perceive you as a human being?
- Has your manager discussed your career development with you in the past six months?
- Does your supervisor communicate goals and expectations to the entire team clearly enough?
- Would you recommend your manager to other employees of Google?
- What does your manager do well and should continue doing?
- What should your manager change?
What to take away from this list
The above list speaks for itself. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that none of the questions concern hard skills or technical knowledge. In today’s environment, these do not matter as much in most managerial positions as soft skills, such as empathy, communication abilities, and the ability to organize work. From the list above, it is therefore useful to take away that employees and companies value above all a manager’s ability to build an environment in which workers feel appreciated and safe, and where they feel support for their productivity and personal development.
