In order for your employees to achieve the best possible results and fully use their potential, they need not only appropriate knowledge and skills, but also healthy self confidence. Even exceptional abilities alone do not ensure high quality performance if they are not accompanied by confidence in one’s own competencies. If you notice that one of your subordinates would benefit from greater self confidence, we offer three tips on how to increase it.
Tip no. 1: More authority
It is very difficult to instill self confidence in someone if you do not at the same time allow them sufficient space for independent decision making and autonomous work. To enable an employee to fully realize their professional potential, you must grant them adequate authority and enough room for initiative and creativity. The subordinate will then know that you truly trust them and that this trust is not merely superficial.
Tip no. 2: Asking for advice
As stated in an article on LinkedIn Pulse, another simple but effective way to increase a subordinate’s self confidence is to ask them for advice. By doing so, you show that you value their opinion and experience and that you genuinely respect their knowledge. In general, the more you involve an employee in project related decisions and the more you listen to them, the more their self confidence will grow.
Tip no. 3: Public praise
No matter what anyone may claim, we are all somewhat ego driven. When a supervisor publicly praises our work in front of others, few can resist a feeling of satisfaction. Moreover, this situation reliably increases self confidence, as public praise also elevates the employee’s abilities in the eyes of their colleagues.
