The term toxic work environment refers to an environment in which certain unethical practices are common or where principles and behaviours that undermine employees' psychological well being or even their health have become standard practice. It is not merely a short term conflict, but rather a pattern of recurring unhealthy behaviours that create an unpleasant and hostile atmosphere. Unfortunately, team managers are not always aware of how serious the situation within their own team has become. Could a toxic environment also exist in your workplace? Dysfunctional communication within the team

If communication from team leadership or among team members is non transparent, ineffective, or otherwise poor, it may be a sign of a toxic environment within the team.
Stress as the norm
Chronic and unrelenting workplace stress is certainly one of the typical signs of a toxic environment. When everyone, including the manager, is trapped in a constant rush, productivity and focused work inevitably suffer. Chronic stress also has a serious impact on employees' mental well being and will sooner or later affect the overall success or failure of the entire team.
Absence of friendly relationships in the workplace
Friendly relationships in the workplace should be the norm. Team members must respect one another and should feel at least enough mutual goodwill to collaborate effectively. The absence of any friendly relationships, or even constant conflicts among team members, points to the possible toxicity of the work environment.
Zero willingness to help others
A well functioning team with strong and inspiring leadership supports one another. If this willingness is absent within the group, something is wrong with the team and quite possibly with its leadership as well. In an effective team, everyone understands that they are working toward the same goal and that they can rely on the support of their colleagues during challenging situations.
