Networking: Use Christmas parties and social events to establish new contacts

The English word „networking“ doesn't have a one-word equivalent in the Czech. Generally, it refers to getting new contact information for new people, primarily in person, i.e. at various social events, for example, conferences, parties, business meetings, etc. What are the rules of networking and what must be taken into account so that your networking is as efficient as possible?

Personal contact

The expression “networking” usually means getting new contacts in person. As the end of the year draws near, and with it various Christmas and New Year parties and meetings, it is worth reminding ourselves, with the help of the HubSpot blog, how to behave at these events so that you take away as many new contacts as possible.

The rules of networking

The following are some of the unofficial rules of networking:

  • Don't expect to be introduced to someone new if you don't introduce your acquaintances to one another. Introduce others and you will get introduced as well.
  • Don't try to make sales and don't negotiate business deals at the event. Just take the person's contact information and schedule an appointment.
  • Get to know something personal about the person, such a hobby you have in common. This informal information will then help you to talk to that person naturally at the meeting.
  • Quality beats quantity. It doesn't matter how many contacts you bring home, what matters is what quality they are.
  • Define the next step directly on the spot. Who will contact who? How? Why?
  • Get in touch within 48 hours. After this time, people might start to forget you, and scheduling a meeting might be more difficult.
